Spostrzeganiem nazywa się złożony układ procesów prowadzący do ukształtowania się subiektywnego obrazu rzeczywistości, spostrzeżenia. Podstawą tych procesów są określone czynności tj. widzenie, słyszenie, smakowanie, wąchanie, odczuwanie dotyku i temperatury itp., które odpowiadają za konstruowanie spostrzeżeń. Percepcja (spostrzeganie) jest pierwszym etapem przetwarzania informacji, które odbierane są przez narządy zmysłów. Dzięki fenomenowi ludzkiego umysłu jest ona dostępna świadomości człowieka, może zostać przez niego zauważona i opisana. Systemy percepcyjne podlegały długiemu procesowi ewolucji, dopiero u człowieka powstał tak skomplikowany, szczególnie czuły mechanizm wykrywający i reagujący na różnorodność bodźców docierających z otoczenia. Każdy człowiek w momencie urodzenia posiada genetycznie zaprogramowane możliwości percepcyjne. Jednak nie pozostają one takie same przez resztę jego życia. Nowe sytuacje, doświadczenia życiowe wchodzące w skład procesu uczenia się mogą prowadzić do zmian tych zdolności, kształtować je w specyficzny sposób. Na poziomie elementarnym proces spostrzegania opiera się na wrodzonym mechanizmie przetwarzania sensorycznego (zmysłowego) prostych właściwości zmysłowych np. oko reaguje na światło. Dokładniej, następuje przetworzenie energii bodźca np. fal świetlnych o pewnej częstotliwości, na określoną aktywność neuronalną (powstanie impulsu elektrycznego przewodzonego przez odpowiednie komórki układu nerwowego), następnie dochodzi do pobudzenia powierzchni recepcyjnej danego analizatora np. komórek receptorowych oka. Organizm człowieka jest zdolny do wykrywania trzech cech bodźców: charakterystycznego dla nich typu energii np. świetlnej, termicznej; lokalizacji w przestrzeni; natężenia w określonych momentach. Bodziec musi charakteryzować się określona siłą, aby został wykryty przez receptory czuciowe np. siatkówkę oka. Wielkość bodźca, który może zostać poprawnie wykryty w 50% przypadków to próg absolutny, wielkość mniejsza od tego progu to wielkość podprogowa. W dalszej kolejności informacje z otoczenia, odebrane przez określony analizator, są odpowiednio selekcjonowane. Dzieje się tak przede wszystkim dlatego, że narządy zmysłów człowieka są w stanie odebrać ograniczoną liczę bodźców, ze względu na ich natężenie czy częstotliwość. Następnie wyselekcjonowane informacje są w określony sposób analizowane, organizowane i interpretowane, a uwaga zostaje skierowana tak, by zdobyć więcej danych lub odszukać nowe informacje gdzieś indziej. Wymienione powyżej czynności wchodzą w zakres złożonego, wieloetapowego procesu percepcji. We współczesnej psychologii istnieją dwa podstawowe podejścia w analizie procesu spostrzegania. Pierwsze z nich dotyczy wyodrębniania cech. Według niego istotą percepcji jest integrowanie prostych elementów bodźca w jedną, złożoną całość. Przedmiot, który jest rozpoznawany zostaje porównany do określonego wzorca (poznawczej reprezentacji tego przedmiotu w pamięci). Identyfikacja tego przedmiotu zależy od tego, ile jego elementów odpowiada tej reprezentacji. Liczne badania dowodzą tendencji człowieka do uzupełniania nawet brakujących informacji o danym przedmiocie np. spostrzegania figur niekompletnych jako pełnych. Porównywanie do wzorca odbywa się najczęściej w warunkach korzystnych dla jednostki. Druga z koncepcji podkreśla tworzenie bądź odkrywanie przedmiotu w procesie organizacji percepcyjnej. Proces ten łączy nastawienie, oczekiwania i posiadane doświadczenia, które są zakodowane w strukturach poznawczych człowieka. Wiedza, procesy pamięci, wnioskowania stanowią podstawę spostrzegania. Człowiek odbierając różnorodne informacje stara się łączyć je i organizować tak, aby dostrzec ich znaczenie i sens. Psychologia postaci (Gestalt) opiera się na założeniu, że percepcja jest zdolnością polegającą na wprowadzaniu organizacji i symetrii w ogromie informacji docierających ze świata zewnętrznego. Wyodrębnienie przedmiotu z jego otoczenia stanowi warunek jego percepcji. Polega to na zdolności oddzielenia tego przedmiotu (figury) od jego otoczenia (tła). W pewnych sytuacjach stanowi ono o nowym znaczeniu spostrzeganego przedmiotu (figury) np. karabin w gablocie w muzeum ma inne znaczenie niż w ręku żołnierza podczas wojny, ukrywa je (maskuje) np. umaszczenie niektórych zwierząt służy ukryciu przed ewentualnym napastnikiem. Człowiek stosuje określone reguły strukturalizacyjne, które pozwalają na sprawny i efektywny przebieg procesu percepcji. Sposób funkcjonowania systemu poznawczego, proces selekcji w trakcie spostrzegania, poprzedni i aktualny przedmiot uwagi determinują informacje docierające do określonych ośrodków w mózgu. Proces uwagi jest uwarunkowany takimi czynnikami jak: stopień podobieństwa bodźców: im bardziej podobne są następujące po sobie bodźce tym trudniej przyciągają uwagę, wyraźnie różny od nich bodziec przykuje uwagę; trudność zadania; brak wprawy i doświadczenia; zagrożenie i niepokój; uprzedzenia i roztargnienie, uprzedzenia ukierunkują uwagę na bodźce zgodne z ich treścią i skrajnie niezgodne z nią, roztargnienie rozprasza uwagę, istotne z punktu widzenia danego zadania bodźce mogą umknąć uwadze; nuda; przyzwyczajenie do danego bodźca, przy braku zmian bodźca przez pewien okres czasu, następuje osłabienie fizjologicznych i psychologicznych reakcji, receptory przestają reagować na ten bodziec - zjawisko habituacji. Niemal na każdym z etapów tego procesu jednostka podejmuje swoiste decyzje (nie zawsze świadome) dotyczące tego, jakie dane mogą zostać dostrzeżone, jak ukierunkować uwagę, w jaki sposób informacje mają być zorganizowane, zinterpretowane, jakie wnioski wobec tego należy wyciągnąć. Niebagatelną rolę odgrywają tutaj czynniki związane z daną osobą tj.: jej doświadczenia ukształtowane w procesie uczenia się, też doświadczenia związane z określoną kulturą, informacje zawarte w pamięci, jej nastawienie, zainteresowania, motywy, potrzeby, postawy, oczekiwania, emocje. Silny wpływ czynników motywacyjnych, emocjonalnych i oczekiwań na efekt spostrzegania wyraża się w zjawiskach obronności i wrażliwości percepcyjnej. Obronność percepcyjna polega na niedopuszczeniu do świadomego spostrzeżenia sygnału np. zagrażającego, wywołującego lęk, wstręt, podwyższenie progu wrażliwości na ten bodziec, dłuższy czas reakcji. Uwrażliwienie percepcyjne jest mechanizmem odwrotnym i zależy od przewidywanego przez jednostkę prawdopodobieństwa pojawienia się pewnych bodźców, wystąpienia określonych zdarzeń (człowiek zazwyczaj większe prawdopodobieństwo przypisuje zdarzeniom pożądanym), wiąże się z szybszym, świadomym spostrzeżeniem bodźca, którego spodziewamy się, na który oczekujemy, obniżeniem progu wrażliwości na ten bodziec, szybszym czasem reakcji. W sytuacjach niejednoznacznych, o pewnym stopniu niepewności, człowiek może kierować się schematami poznawczymi. Powstają one na podstawie dotychczasowych doświadczeń, pozwalają kształtować oczekiwania związane z przedmiotem, wydarzeniem, osobą. Dzięki nim jednostka nadaje znaczenie, sens sytuacji, w której uczestniczy, stara się przewidzieć konsekwencje wydarzeń, zachowanie innych osób. Zdarza się jednak, że schematy te nie są w pełni adekwatne do rzeczywistości i zniekształcają spostrzegany obiekt. Do takich nie zgodnych z rzeczywistością schematów zaliczają się stereotypy oraz uprzedzenia. Podsumowując - proces spostrzegania jest złożony, aktywny, cykliczny, ma charakter decyzyjny oraz w dużej mierze nieświadomy. Percepcja umożliwia kształtowanie stałego, zorganizowanego, spójnego i sensownego odzwierciedlenia rzeczywistości. Ten swoisty akt tworzenia odbywa się poprzez odbiór informacji z otoczenia, selekcję tych danych, ich analizę, organizowanie i integrację. Przy czym, w procesie spostrzegania wykorzystywane są nie tylko informacje aktualnie napływające z otoczenia.
